Pickards Mountain Eco Institute is a 350 acre Educational Farm in central North Carolina dedicated to finding ways of living more harmoniously with the planet. We welcome tax deductible donations through The Abundance Foundation.
Our work is rooted in the belief that the fate of future generations will depend on their connections with the land. When the fossil fuels are gone, they will have to find ways to supply their food and energy in renewable and sustainable ways. By teaching the children to respect natural cycles and utilize renewable resources, we offer them keys to survival in a cooperative local and global community.
Children of all ages are invited to visit the farm.
OUR MISSION: “Pickards Mountain Eco-Institute is dedicated to offering practical solutions to the environmental crisis.”
Preschool Programs offer authentic farm experiences. Children feed goats and pigs, find warm eggs in the chicken coop, and taste fresh garden produce.
Elementary Programs tour the farm, harvest produce, play with the goats,
feed the pigs, hold chickens, explore the water cycle and the origins of our food.
Middle School Programs explore the idea of sustainability in agriculture and energy production while touring the farm, living village, renewable energy system, and biodiesel refinery.
High School Programs explore the idea of sustainability and human responsibility while touring the farm, living village, renewable energy system, and biodiesel refinery. The environmental crisis is placed in an historical context, and students are empowered with the knowledge that their choices shape the future.
A story from Pickards Mountain:
I just have to share with you this story about a little boy named Andrew who visited the farm last week on a field trip with his class.
He was 8 years old, and completely intrigued by the photovoltaic array. He had lots of questions about where the energy went in and where it came out. Then he sat for a long moment just gazing at the sky. I could see the wheels turning in his head. When he finally spoke, he said with a grin “Plants get energy from the sun… so a solar panel works like a PLANT!”
I love watching these realizations happen… this renewable technology makes so much sense. It provides a whole new level of hope to a generation who knows they are being handed a major planetary crisis.
With gratitude,
Megan Toben

“Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream,” on Sunday May 17th, from 10am-4pm.
Through dynamic group interactions, leading edge information, and inspiring multimedia, participants of this half-day event are inspired to reconnect with their deep concern for our world, and are empowered to make a difference.
We will explore these four questions:
Where Are We? – an examination of the state of environmental, social and personal well-being
How did We Get Here? – tracing the root causes that lead to our current imbalance
What’s Possible for the Future? – discovering new ways of relating with each other, with the Earth and looking at the emerging Movement for change
Where Do We Go from Here? – considering the stand we want to be in the world and our personal and collective impact
If you are ready to be disturbed, inspired and moved to action, and to be introduced to a thriving community of committed cohorts, then join us in exploring the most critical concerns of our times, and discover new opportunities to make a real difference in accelerating the emergence of an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on this planet!
We will enjoy an organic lunch together, and take a walk in the woods. Participants are encouraged to make a $50 donation to the Eco-Institute to cover facilitator and lunch costs. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
