Community Farm Land Trust

The Community Farm Land Trust Working Group is meeting to identify strategies for protecting local produce/meat/dairy farms – including the land, structures, and businesses. One of the central strategies is to assist farmers who own and operate food-producing farms in the region with developing Strategic Farm Conservation Plans for their land and businesses.

The Community Farmland Trust Working Group seeks to develop detailed, county-by-county GIS (geographic information systems) maps and databases of food-producing farms as the basis of an outreach effort to contact individual farm owners to determine needs for strategic conservation plans.

To achieve this level of farm support, the Community Farmland Trust Working Group will facilitate and coordinate partnerships with:

  • Cooperative Extension agents in Orange, Durham, Chatham, Alamance, Caswell, and Person Counties.

  • Statewide farm organizations such as NC Farm Transition Network, American Farmland Trust, and Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.

  • Land trusts such as the Triangle Land Conservancy, Eno River Association, Tar River Land Conservancy, and Piedmont Land Conservancy.

  • Conservation consulting groups such as Unique Places (www.uniqueplacesllc.com) and Land In Common (www.landincommon.org).

Opportunities for a non-profit Community Farm Trust are being explored as a means of securing a land base for affordable, sustainable food production (a food commons for the Triangle region).
