Ed Witkin

Ed Witkin has been designing and installing solar electric systems for both on and off grid applications since 1987. Throughout that time he’s been involved with renewable energy education, through hands-on workshops, teaching engagements, displays at fairs and festivals, and providing solar power generators for PA systems at music festivals and concerts. He has also written articles on renewable energy, which have been published in Home Power Magazine.

Before moving to North Carolina in 2002, Ed and his family lived in an off the grid passive and active solar powered house in Bridgewater, CT.  Ed built the post and beam house in 1991, using a solar powered generator to run all the power tools during the on site construction.

Ed is the owner of Carrboro Solar Works, LLC in Carrboro, NC, a solar consulting firm which designs and installs solar electric systems wherever the sun shines. He is one of the instructors of the photovoltaic course at the NC Solar Center and also of the Greenpros Organization which provides practical green building training for the residential construction market.

When not working with solar energy, Ed performs as a musician in several groups in the Chapel Hill area. He lives in the Calvander (Northwest corner of Chapel Hill, NC) with his wife, Ellen, daughters, Amelia and Chloe, and several dogs, cats and horses.
