About the Instructor

Alan Russo has been making artisan soaps for ten years and is the owner of Sacred Sun Bath and Body Products for which he creates natural bath and body products. Alan’s special interests are the historical and traditional uses of plants. In his spare time, Alan explores the beauty and many uses of the natural world through photography, woodturning, fossil collecting, astronomy, soapmaking, herbalism, and ethnobotany, to name a few.
He can start a fire using a hand made bow drill and build a wilderness shelter to snuggle into as the embers die down. Alan is an innovative cook, who develops recipes using local plants. Some of his recent culinary successes include Redbud Flower Pancakes, Sauteed Nettles, Acorn Muffins, Milkweed Seed Pods, Sumac Aide and Mimosa Water.
Alan blogs about his projects and experiences at Ethnobotanical Pursuits. His original inspiration came from Tom Brown of Tracking, Nature and Wilderness Survival School Fame. He has studied Chatham County plants for many years.
