Sunday, October 28th, 12pm-4pm

Located at The Plant, 220 Lorax Lane, Pittsboro, NC. For directions, click here.

One of the most interesting types of wines you can make is honey wine, traditionally known as mead. Making honey wine is a fun and unique hobby or occupation. Students will learn about mead and sample a few different locally made meads.  Owners of Starrlight Meadery will share their expertise and demonstrate how to make meadand get started in this interesting hobby. You will also learn about ways to flavor mead to make your honey wine more unique, complex, and interesting with seasonal and natural flavors such as flowers, berries, fruit and hot peppers. Each student will take home a one gallon “mead in progress” of their very own.

Minimum age to participate is 21 by the class start date.

Ben and Becky Starr, owners of Starrlight Mead in Pittsboro, have had a love affair with mead for many years.  They started drinking it at Renaissance faires and then discovered, 8.5 years ago, that it could be made at home! Many friends said that it was the “best mead ever” (although they usually had an empty bottle in hand), so the Starrs entered an international mead making competition.  Their Spiced Apple Mead won the gold medal in it’s category and took Best In Show out of 212 entries. That launched the quest to make commercial mead with NC honey.  Now, Ben and Becky enjoy making commercial meads available and teaching others how to make their own!
